Guest Michael Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 I was driving my '96 V6 Auto and accelerating in 3rd gear, I got to about 70 and instead of shifting to 4th, the gearbox put itself into either 1st or 2nd!Needless to say the car slowed down very rapidly while the smell of boiling ATF teased the nostrils. The gearbox is now written off and I don't fancy a second re-build ( It had only done 26000m since re-build). Has anybody suffered similar faults? Was it hydraulic or electronic? Any suggestions welcomed. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 Impossible to tell without examination. I have heard of a similar problem with an old BW 3-speed auto that was in top on a motorway and suddenly decided to change to 2nd.Never found out what caused it, but owner was very wary of cruising at speed after this event.....Hope that your engine wasn't damaged by over-revving too. Guest Michael Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 Thanks for the comments - I think that the engine just about survived the revving. I think the lack of confidence in the unit is always an issue even after, what appears to be, a successfull repair is carried out. Is there a market for dead Galaxys? I am fed up with this one although it's been a lovely car to own in terms of comfort and drivability. Quote
